Dr Jeroen Swart

Dr Swart is a sports physician and exercise physiologist at the Sports Science Institute in Newlands, Cape Town.

In addition to an undergraduate medical degree, he has a Masters Degree in Sports Medicine and a PhD in exercise physiology.

He currently divides his time between research, clinical sports medicine and high performance cycling. He heads up the Discovery High Performance Cycling Center at the Sports Science Institute of South Africa.

He has numerous publications in international scientific journals and his field of expertise include the application of training techniques specific to cycling, cycling biomechanics and the control of exercise by the brain.

He is the designer of ErgoFiT and ErgoMAX, the most accurate cycle fitting product available. In addition, he has provided biomechanics expertise to some of the world’s leading cyclists, including World Cup Champions and previous winners of the Tour De France.

As a coach, Dr Swart oversees the training of numerous International athletes and Champions, including World Cup winner Burry Stander and top professional road rider John Lee Augustyn. He was recently appointed as the Olympic coach to the 2012 London Olympic Games.

As an athlete he has been National Champion in cross country mountainbiking at both elite and age group level and represented South Africa at the Elite World Championships in 2001 and 2002.
